Sydney’s Body of Work wins large format awards at Printing United

Body of Work – a division of North Sydney Armstrong printing and design agency – won two large format awards at this week’s Printing United Expo in Las Vegas for its “stunning” 3D mural project titled Explosive – printed on a Roland DG IU-1000F UV flatbed printer.

tele exploExplosive won the 2022 Premier Print Award for Printed Product of the Year – Large Format Inkjet Printing – as well as Best of Category for Poster/Fine Art – Large Format Inkjet Printing.

“This piece has great fine lines in the hair, overall texture, and the use of gold is impressive,” said the judges for the Print Product of the Year award. “We are impressed with the realistic features such as the well-defined pearls, coins and body skin tones. There is eye-catching contrast and sharpness in this piece. Very good edge definition against a crisp black background.

Body of Work is a division of photography, video and web design agency Armstrong Studio, founded by photographer Bob Armstrong.

In its entry description, Body of Work stated:

This 3d mural features a system unique to Body of Work. It is so complex that it takes a week to print and requires perfect registration of clear images and the final image. As it is insured for AU$25,000, we would like it returned to us after use.”

Prepress: There are 16 complex masking layers perfectly aligned with the final image
Prepress equipment: Apple Macs
Printing press: Sixteen coats of varnish are applied before the final image – all in perfect registration.
Printing pressing equipment: Roland IU-1000F
Postpress/Finishing: The weight of the varnish layers is so great that a stable aluminum substrate was needed
Paper/Substrate: Aluminum substrate.

The Premier Print Awards represent all areas of print production including screen, offset, digital, wide format, flexo, gravure and more. This year’s competition rewarded projects from signs and displays, commercial printers, packaging printers/converters, factories, commercial binders/finishers, graphic designers and students with just 10 winners selected in the large format categories.
