Northman posters reveal Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman and Björk

Ahead of its release later this month, Focus Features has just released several new character posters for its new movie, The man from the north. The new posters give us a look at the star cast of the new historical epic, based on the legend of Amleth, a medieval Scandinavian story that is said to have inspired Hamletperhaps one of the best-known dramas of all time.

The man from the north will follow Amleth, played by Alexander Skarsgard, a Viking on a mission to avenge the death of his father. The new character posters, released today, show Amleth, along with several other characters, and their respective roles, looking directly at the viewer. Amleth of Skarsgård is shown shirtless with nothing but an amulet around his neck, covered in what appears to be blood.

Other character posters show the full cast of medieval drama, including Bjork‘s Seeress, a prophet who is shown in his character poster wearing a headdress and layered necklaces, with his eyes removed. The other character posters follow this pattern, showing the character in close-up, with details on their potential arcs and specific aspects hinted at through visual cues. Anya Taylor Joy‘s Olga, for example, is shown rather nondescript, but is also shown with a fleet of ships in the background, possibly signaling her fate or role in the film.

The other character posters feature Willem Dafoe like Heimir the Fool, Nicole Kidman as Queen Gudrún, the mother of Amleth, and though the story closely follows the arc of Hamlet, a woman with mysterious motives and a complicated relationship with the death of her dead husband. The final character poster features Ethan Hawke as King Aurvandill, the deceased king. Each character poster features the film’s tagline, “conquer your destiny”, which certainly imbues the portraits with a sense of action, as each of these characters swings on the knife edge of their own lives, with their plans leading them into destinies they had not wanted, but which become unavoidable with each move towards a life of their own design.

The man from the north is led by Robert Eggerthe director behind 2015 The witch and 2019 Lighthouse.

The film was written by Eggers and sjonIcelandic poet, novelist and lyricist.

The man from the north hits theaters on April 22, 2022. In the meantime, check out the character posters below:
