Chi Int’l Film Fest Announces Winning Poster Design | Chicago coil
Michael Zhang’s poster
selected after global
competition to represent
festival, October 10-21
(Chicago) – Cinema / Chicago and the 54th Chicago International Film Festival have announced 2018 poster design competition winner Michael Zhang of Chicago. Zhang’s design will be the signature of the Festival, which will be held from October 10 to 21, 2018.
Zhang has won a truly global competition which, over the past three years, has brought together winners from Scotland, Taiwan and the Netherlands. Its design was chosen from over 200 submissions spanning 30 countries. The poster depicts the facade of a vintage movie theater, showcasing the exciting thrill of a neon-lit marquee and classic art deco design. The slogan for this year’s event, âEveryone Loves Movies,â crosses the marquee alongside the Festival’s beloved âeyesâ logo. Zhang, a Chicago resident, also incorporated the city of Chicago’s four-star flag into the poster.
âThis competition aims to bring together diverse perspectives on what the festival is and what it means to people,â said Michael Kutza, founder and CEO of Cinema / Chicago. âMichael’s design captures the glamor and allure of a classic movie theater visit while being very contemporary, and we loved his personal connection to art, Chicago and the Film Festival itself. â
âI am honored and delighted to see it printed at the Festival. I’ve been attending the Festival for a few years now, so it really means a lot to me, âsaid Zhang. âWhatever cinema you go to, the excitement of the marquee lights is part of every moviegoer’s experience. For me, the lights were always a sign that I was about to leave the real world and get lost in an on-screen story. When designing this poster, I wanted to evoke a similar sense of wonder and nostalgia.
As the winner of the competition, Michael will receive a prize of $ 2,500 and his design will be used in marketing materials throughout the city, including on the cover of the festival guide, posters and merchandise.
