An artist who identifies as having an intellectual disability won the poster design competition for next year’s Adelaide Fringe with a self-portrait that portrays him as a Fringe artist.

An artist who identifies as having an intellectual disability won the poster design competition for next year’s Adelaide Fringe with a self-portrait that portrays him as a Fringe artist.

Warrnambool painter Matthew Clarke started creating art in 2005 and typically works with acrylics on linen, but also recreated his winning design as a mural on Union Street in the East End Adelaide, which will be featured on Fringe’s Street Art Explosion map.

“For me, painting is wanting to express my happiness to others,” said Mr. Clarke.

“I like to use bright, vivid colors to attract people and make them happy with art.

“I have a disability, so I’m quite proud to show that there are no barriers between that and creating works of art. “

Mr Clarke was commissioned to create a painting for Melbourne’s Art Trams project last year and now his work will also appear on Adelaide Trams as part of next year’s Fringe marketing campaign.

“I am delighted to see my poster displayed everywhere in Adelaide. It really means a lot to me, ”he said.

Fringe director Heather Croall said the 2019 poster moved away from the graphic designs of recent years and a nod to some of the iconic Fringe posters created by painters in the past.

“We chose Matthew’s entry because of the striking, spirited brushstrokes that convey a sense of risk-taking and adventure and the vibrant colors that encapsulate the energy of Fringe,” Ms. Croall said.

“Everything comes together to create a superb self-portrait of the artist presenting a Fringe show. We love the story behind the poster and the way it celebrates the performer in all of us.

Ms Croall said that the fact that the winner is a disabled artist complements the Fringe’s growing number of initiatives to improve the accessibility and inclusiveness of the festival.

“Adelaide Fringe is constantly looking for ways to meet the needs of all performers and members of the public, from detailed location information to initiatives such as audio tours for the visually impaired. “

There were 357 entries submitted for the poster competition for next year’s Fringe, which runs from February 15 to March 17. Details of the program will be released in December.
